Personal Statement

I am a determined, passionate, and loyal athlete who has been able to persevere through challenges in life. With soccer’s competitive edge I have been able to build my character, confidence, and leadership which helped me to overcome dyslexia as well as flourish in my education and social awareness. Soccer became my passion around the age of 7. I utilized soccer to escape from my insecurities about learning and how people perceived and looked at me differently. I spent many days practicing and developing the skills of the players I admired from my generation as well as decades past such as Micheal Carrick, Andres Iniesta, and Kevin De Bruyne. I concentrated on the skills and qualities that modern-day players struggled with at my age such as using both feet flawlessly, attacking offense positioning, and constant defensive reading. I eventually found that my dyslexia actually helped me read the defense and find the open space better than other kids that were not dyslexic. Playing for an MLS Next team, I can now see how important my field vision will be a great asset in my development, as the pace of play is very fast.

I am choosing to attend a Division One school not only for my education but for soccer to help me achieve my goal of reaching the MLS and beyond, and to continue my life's journey. I feel that my passion for soccer has propelled me to a level of success in life I thought I could not attain as only a student. My dream would be to play in the MLS and then use my experience, education, and knowledge of the game to become a coach. I also aspire to help children that struggle with the same disabilities as I did so they can also achieve their own goals in life through the same sport that I love. I really feel that soccer helped me learn a lot about myself and will help me complete my life's dreams, ambitions, and legacy in the kids that I will help later in life. Having a sport to lean on as a child and mold you as you grow through the years into a serious and competitive athlete who feels great about himself is a true blessing.
