Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Hephzibah Sharon Romalus and I am a 17-year-old, aspiring young female track athlete from Papua New Guinea (PNG), currently I am doing Grade 12 at Lae Secondary School. I’m also part of the Junior Athletics team at our Regional High-Performance Centre of Excellence here in Lae City, Morobe Province. This year 2025 I have been selected to be a member of the PNG Athletics team to the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau.
Athletics runs deep in my family—my grandfather, Peter Tavip, was a member of PNG’s first National Athletics Team. Inspired by his legacy, I’ve competed in various regional and national events in our nation including debuting at the 2024-17th Oceania Championships in Suva, Fiji and then at the 2024 Annual PNG Air National Athletics Track & Field Championship, achieving a personal best high jump of 1.66m.
My passion for athletics is matched by my commitment to academics. I strive for excellence both on the track and in the classroom, balancing my studies with intense training. I believe my strong work ethic and discipline will allow me to thrive in a competitive environment, and my leadership skills ensure I contribute positively to my team.
I value teamwork and am dedicated to creating a supportive atmosphere for my teammates. I aim to continue improving and eventually represent my country on the international stage - this dream finds fulfillment this year 2025, as I will represent my nation as a member of Athletics Team PNG in Palau.
Thank you for your consideration. I am excited about the opportunity to join your program and grow both as an athlete and student.
