Personal Statement
I want to start my personal statement by sharing a passage of scripture with you, Hebrews 12:11-13. The passage states, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. Therefore, strengthen your feeble arms and weak knees”. What I believe the Lord is trying to to tell us here is that while the work we put in to prepare for something might be painful, the benefits we receive will be worth it. I try to take that to heart in anything I do, whether that be in classroom, on the field, or at home.
Throughout my high school career, I have focused on the acronym C.A.P. to truly lead me to where I want to be as a player. C.A.P. stands for coach-ability, attitude, and preparation. I believe one of the best qualities as a person, not just an athlete, is coach-ability. Those around us who are “coaching” us, whether that be parents, teachers, coaches, etc. , only want the best for us. If you can’t be coached, you can’t improve, whether that be as a person, student, or an athlete. I am on a mission, as all three mentioned above, to always be coachable and listen to what those above me try to tell me.
Improvement is an important component of being an athlete, you can never be content at where you are at right now. The attitude aspect of the acronym also ties into the coach-ability aspect of things as well. Whenever you mess up, you can’t get mad at yourself and let it get in your head, there’s still an entire game left to play. Lastly preparation is a crucial part of being an athlete, specifically the weight room. “ Don’t be upset by the results you didn’t get with the work you didn’t do”-Inky Johnson. You can’t be upset if you’re not any stronger than last season, if you didn’t put the time and the work in during the off-season in the weight room.
I’m excited to enter this new chapter of my life as a player and a person. Entering college I plan to take prelaw throughout my four years as a student to then further my education with a J.D. and become a corporate lawyer. I’m ready to improve and work as hard as I can at making myself and my teammates and peers around me better.
