Personal Statement
My name is Jiyah Caban and I am a 16 year old Junior at Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, CA. I have played Varsity Softball and Basketball my Freshman and Sophomore years. My dream is to go to college and get my degree in the field of Sports Psychology while playing the game I have fallen in love with since I was 8 years old.
I feel my best quality is that I will do whatever it takes for the team. I have played 8 position during my time in competitive softball. While I do not pitch for my travel team, I pitch for my High School team because that is what we need. I pitched well enough to become the first Freshman in our league to ever win League MVP in the sport of Softball and it's because I pitched to give us a chance every game. This summer, I made the U18 Philippines National Softball Team and we competed in Dallas for the WBSC World Cup Qualifiers. It was an amazing experience. Experienced what it would be like as a college athlete, as we had a roommate, ate as a team, practiced/trained, and did homework to keep up with school as we were away from home and our schools. Positionally, I usually play middle infield (SS/2B). Our Philippine team was loaded at those positions, so I stepped up and played 3rd Base and 1st Base. In a game vs. Ireland, while I did not start the game, I found a way to contribute to winning by being put in the game as a defensive substitution at 1st Base. I came up with an inning ending double play on a sharp liner at 1B and tapped the 1st base to get out of the inning to keep it a tied 1-1 game with runners in scoring position. When I came up to bat with runners on 1st and 2nd, I came up with a 2 out, 2 Run RBi double to give us the lead and never looked back to give us our first win of the tournament. I love this game, and I would love to keep playing while getting the best education. I will do whatever it takes to help the team, cheer, catch bullpen, chart pitches... ANYTHING!
Thank you for taking the time to view my profile and read my personal statement.
