Personal Statement

My name is Brooke "Brookie" Chaney, and I will soon be a senior at Woodward Academy. At the age of six, I picked up a club for the first time. At the time, I was a young dancer taking ballet classes, which is where most of the girls my age would be. When I would go out the range with my dad there weren't as many young girls my age swinging clubs. I had previously perceived golf as a sport played by men, but as I've continued to play and learn the game, I now view it as a means for me to stand out. As my father taught me the fundamentals of the sport, I quickly realized that golf involved more than just swinging a club. Learning the proper swing technique and the perseverance required to get through a difficult hole has shown me a different side of golf that I've grown to appreciate. Over the years, I've formed a strong attachment to the sport. It has improved my focus, helped me grow as a student-athlete, and given me the ability to quickly correct a mistake in my play when I notice one. Knowing that I am a young black girl competing in a predominantly white sport has inspired me to stay driven, work hard, and stay motivated. I enjoy competing with my teammates and supporting one another as we compete in a difficult tournament. As a team player, It brings me joy to see how easily my positive energy can influence the attitude of a teammate. I intend to pursue my passion for playing golf at the collegiate level and possibly even beyond.

My NCAA ID# is 2205570551. Thank you!
