Talk about a big week on defense.
VanGilder registered a season-high 20 stops in second-seeded Joplin’s 24-21 double-overtime victory over seventh-seeded Lee’s Summit last Friday to open district play.

Joplin standout Draven VanGilder is an emerging prospect who can hit hard, make big plays in space and easily stop the run. A first-team all-state, all-district, and all-conference LB who shows a high level of production and good technique overall. VanGilder has terrific footwork and can stop and flip his hips and quickly regain ground and make physical tackles. He has good vision as well and he plays extremely hard and sees the field well and can anticipate plays and completely knock the wind out of ball carriers. Last season he recorded an astounding 173 total tackles with five tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, four QBH, three pass deflections, and one field goal blocked.

VanGilder shows mobility, good muscle tone and speed as a linebacker as he is capable of catching up with ball carriers from behind and making strong and physical tackles. He’s a playmaker at the position and he is good at seeing the field and knowing when to make a move. He can jump out and looks to find his way to the backfield but is also a good defender in space, looking to get as close to his opponents as he can and make it difficult for them to put a move on. A promising Joplin linebacker and a three sport athlete as well.
