(1st Tier AAU Club Program) August 2021 To Whom It May Concern: This is a letter of reference written for a student/athlete I coach, Sonya Potthoff. I have had the pleasure of getting to know and work with Sonya as a basketball player I’ve trained and coached over the past year. Sonya has brought a great attitude, energy, and strong work ethic to every training session. Sonya’s unwavering passion, dedication, and desire to get better has catapulted her game to an elite level. I’m very excited to see where this ultimately takes her one day! I believe she has unlimited potential and a very high ceiling in further development. In college, I see Sonya as a dynamic left-hander that can play the point or shooting guard, score in bunches, facilitate and defend the opponent’s best perimeter player. Sonya has the intangibles that every coach is looking for in a student/athlete. She is a very caring, compassionate, and responsible teammate that can change the entire dynamic of a room with her smile and positive energy. I wholeheartedly recommend Sonya for any university that is looking for a player that will immediately make your program better in the locker room, on the basketball court and in the classroom. (1st Tier AAU Club Program) To Whom It May Concern: It is with great pleasure that I write this letter of recommendation for Sonya Potthoff. I had the opportunity to work with Sonya this past season as an athlete on my North Tartan 16u Elite basketball team. Sonya impressed me, not only with her athletic ability, but most importantly her respect, and selflessness with which she competed. Little did I know at the time that those character traits exhibited in Sonya would eventually lead me to writing this letter of recommendation. As a student, Sonya displays work ethic and discipline. She takes academics seriously, and it was obvious from the start that she is a gifted athlete. As an athlete, Sonya works hard and is always willing to compete. She has always displayed great respect for teammates, opponents, and the rules of the game and always acts with integrity. Sonya is always willing to do whatever she can to help the team. As a person, Sonya cares for the others around her. Her character traits as a person emphasize her ability as a student athlete. She is reliable, honest, and has high morals and values. Please accept my enthusiastic recommendation of Sonya Potthoff. Feel free to give me a call with any questions regarding Sonya’s talents and abilities as I am always willing to advocate for an upstanding individual like Sonya. Sincerely, Matt Pryor Head Girls Basketball Coach Minnehaha Academy & Metro Stars 17U & K-12 Educator and Athletic Director St. Thomas More Catholic School (612) 750-9652To Whom It May Concern: I am thrilled to be able to write this letter of recommendation for Sonya Potthoff. I was honored to have had the privilege to coach Sonya as an assistant coach throughout the 2021 AAU basketball season for our North Tartan 16u Elite team. Sonya was an absolute joy to coach and is the kind of person you want to surround yourself with. She is a fierce competitor on the court with an eager heart to get better every chance that she gets. She is extremely humble in her ability to receive feedback and constructive criticism with an open mind. She is a selfless teammate who wants to not only see the team succeed but finds great joy in watching her teammates succeed as individuals as well! Off the basketball court, Sonya is among the most mature individuals I have had the opportunity to be around. She is a stand-up young lady who strives to do the right thing no matter the circumstances. Her selfless upbringing has set her up for great success as she moves forward in life and I cannot wait to see her positively influence the people around her regardless of the setting or season of life. Sonya is an individual whom I know I can rely on at all times. She is a natural born leader who thrives when given the opportunity to lead those around her in which she leads both verbally and by example. I am most impressed by Sonya’s ability to take the initiative regardless of what is asked of her. Sonya’s reliability was one of our greatest assets as a coaching staff throughout the entire AAU season. As a head basketball coach, it would be a dream to have a team of 10 Sonya’s but to only have 1 Sonya would be, and was, an absolute blessing. I cannot recommend Sonya Potthoff enough to be a member of your team, culture, and athletic family. I am only scratching the surface on all that I can say about Sonya through this letter, if you have any further questions or would like me to expand further on this letter, please feel free to contact me through the contact info below. https://www.midwesthoopsspotlight.com/news_article/show/1236030 Sonya Potthoff (2023 Mahtomedi HS MN): A highly skilled offensive player, Potthoff was one of the top shooters and all-around scorers from the event. Possessing a quick, clean release Potthoff regularly punished defenses that gave her any space during the showcase with her knockdown jump shot. Using a tight reliable handle Potthoff displayed she was also comfortable getting to her spots and scoring off the dribble. A true scoring problem for defenses, she showed she will find a way to get an open look as she was excellent at moving off the ball.

She rarely rushes her shots and is so effective from three she can lull you to sleep. That's because she hits it in girls’ faces with footwork and step-backs. Or puts it on the floor and finishes well. She defended strong and has a smooth effective game.

From PrepGirlsHoops: GRITTIEST COMPETITORS Sonya Potthoff – 2023 guard, Mahtomedi Sonya always brings it, going 100 percent from start to finish. She had the battle scars to prove it when Monday’s game concluded with plugs up her nose to stop the bleeding from some on-court activity. She also had 16 points and played a key role in Mahtomedi’s solid win over Red Wing.

MN Featured40 Eric’s Impactful Fresh Faces: Sonya Potthoff is a lefty sharpshooter who was on fire Saturday. She seemed to know exactly where the line was on the floor and if her feet were set behind the arc, it was more likely than not to find the bottom of the net. However, don’t just assume she was a shooter. If the defense closed out to hard, a nice head fake or quick look off and she would power right past them and either hit the midrange jumper or take it all the way to the basket for a strong finish.

https://www.prepgirlshoops.com/2021/10/top-250-expo-2023-defensive-difference-makers-part-1/Sonya Potthoff – We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again about Sonya: Nobody is going to outwork her on or off the floor. The 5’9 guard from Mahtomedi has really put in the effort to improve steadily over time. She is a weight-room junkie (not surprising given that her dad Doug is a strength coach!) and that heavy-metal dedication has paid off.

Featured40 Minnesota-Jr All-Star Evaluation (November 2020): Sonya is the definition of a hardhat type of player. She showed that she likes to fight downlow for tough rebounds in traffic, on defense, she uses her speed to get around her matchup for steals or deflections. With the ball in her hands, she likes to push the pace and get the ball up the court with quick outlet passes right on the money. Without the ball in her hand, she runs the court strong and fills her lane correctly to help keep the defense spread out. Her area of opportunity is to look for her open opportunities. At times, when she secures the offensive rebound, she was so unselfish that she didn’t look to put the ball back up and in for herself and she looked for the open teammate. Being a consistent scoring threat will help make her an even more difficult of a matchup.

Named one of six sophomores who "raised their stock." Sonya Potthoff – "When we last updated the class of 2023 rankings in June the 5’8 guard from Mahtomedi was one spot away from making the list which included 100 players at the time. Guess who’s going to be added to the list this month. Sonya has earned the right to be called a top prospect through sheer hard work. She lives in the weight room and it shows. Her skills have advanced significantly as Potthoff has worked hard at her craft, gotten stronger and more skilled, and gained confidence and experience. Sonya is a next-level prospect who is likely to have a breakout high school season."

Personal Statement

Finished my senior year of high school as a two-sport captain for two years, all-conference in both tennis and basketball for two years and a three-sport athlete including track my senior year, while graduating in June of 2023. Faith, family, academics, athletics. Those are my priorities first and foremost! I am a committed and dedicated student-athlete. I feel I am very coachable/teachable, have a competitive drive and spirit, am a very good teammate and always try to put my team first! I think I lead well by example on the court and in the classroom.

In basketball, I consider myself a combo-guard and am confident in my ability to handle the ball and play solid man to man defense. I played point-guard on my school team and more of a shooting-guard or wing often in AAU because we had smaller guards than myself. I want to be on the floor as much as I can, so I'll play where ever to help my teams. I think my greatest offensive strength running the point is that I see the floor well and can facilitate the execution of various offensive sets. My passing abilities are stronger than most kids. I hold the Mahtomedi HS single-season assist record with a 101 and single-game assist record with 10.

I feel I'm also very competent with utilizing technology to enhance the impact and learning in my team experiences in high school and AAU ball. I have high expectations for myself and I feel I'm starting to bring out the best of them within myself. I use video apps on my phone and try to be very diligent at breaking down my weaknesses to dial into areas I can improve upon. Having a mature conversation with my Mom on ways I can attempt to improve and pointing out what I'm doing well is helpful. My Mom has a lot of playing and coaching experience at multiple levels, so I have been very appreciative of her willingness to always help me try and better myself in this game!

I believe I'm a person of great integrity. What you see and hear from me is what I will deliver. I'm a very caring, compassionate and responsible teammate. I know I'm  also very dedicated and diligent in my preparation by honing technique in drills and implementing that in my workouts. I'm not afraid to try new ideas if that will be of greater benefit to myself in our dynamic sport. I feel I have a great deal of zest and enthusiasm that many kids have a hard time sustaining throughout a season. I don't think I ever appear to lose my energy level or desire for being a better player.  I live a life that practices health-enhancing behaviors and try to be a model of wellness for my classmates and teammates. I'm trying to grow in my ability to lead peers in various groups in and out of class and I'm pretty disciplined for an 18-year-old. I believe my knowledge of the subject matter is excellent for a teenager and I'm always trying to keep getting better as an athlete through research as well.

We'll see where this game takes me and develops me as a person, but I feel I have a high-ceiling for growth in basketball! I currently play for Coach Brad Vaught at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in Mason City, Iowa.
