Personal Statement
Growing up in South Central Los Angeles has influenced who I am in many levels. From the barriers at school to the lack of resources available in my community, one positive thing remained-my involvement in sports including baseball, basketball, and soccer. Aside from sports my parents influenced me and understood the value of keeping me occupied and provided the space and time to foster my abilities. As a result, both my coaches and parents guided and helped me develop my best attributes which are: to push forward, build relationships, and accomplish all that I set my mind to do.
Some of my earliest include my coaches pulling me aside taking time to explain how to run and execute plays and they always instilled the ideal of finishing strong. From the stands, my parents and coaches would shout words of encouragement that made sports a positive experience. I wanted to extend that same experience to football, but its violent nature and the number of injuries associated with it made my parents think twice about it. As I grew in age the ability to play football opened up and I was given the opportunity to participate in it when I enrolled in high school. I found that I enjoyed the physical and mental challenge of the game. Preparing for the season required discipline, I would want to quit during drills but as things got harder I found myself looking forward to the next challenge and I pushed myself harder.
This growth mindset is needed to continue in order to succeed in both my academic and physical regiment. By the end of high school I will graduate with a 3.5 GPA or higher to ensure my entrance into a university that will support me both as a student on the field and in the classroom. I aspire to pursue a Science and Mathematics degree in the field of astronomy, mechanical engineering, physics, or aerospace engineering. The challenges I face in high school are similar to the ones I face on the football field. I must gain new knowledge in math, science, language arts, football terminology, plays, or specific football skills. This will require persistence, an open mind, and a willingness to be coached in order to succeed. I am confident in my ability to lead teams through my passion, commitment to focus on accomplishments, and results.
