Personal Statement

My name is Max Rogers and I am a 18-year soccer player from Sydney, Australia.  I am an international level student athlete, having represented my COUNTRY. I am interested in college soccer as I believe it would allow me to combine my soccer goals with my academic goals, putting myself on track to play professional football while also obtaining a high-quality college degree. I am currently in Year 12 at St Ignatius College, Riverview in Sydney. I graduate in December 2019.

I sat the SATs on the 9th of March this year, receiving a score of 1280. This was an ok score for me, so I chose to resit the exams recently on the 4th of May and received a 1350. My academic report is attached below.

Some highlights of my soccer to date:

  • I am a current member of Manly United Football Club’s u20 and 1st Grade Squads. This is the highest level of senior club competition in Sydney and is seen as the strongest Men’s competition in Australia.  I am one of the few 18 year olds in these squads, in the country. - I am currently coming tied first in the competition for goals scored (6 in 11 games).
  • I have captained my high school to back-to-back undefeated championships, being selected in regional and states sides both years and this year being selected in the Australian Schoolboys Soccer Team to tour the UK. (equivalent of an All-American Selection)
  • I was selected to play for Sydney FC (our equivalent of LA Galaxy) u18s in 2017 (I was 15 at the time), I left them in 2018 to play 1st Grade and u20s at Manly (in the same competition) because Sydney were not supportive of my college goals.
  • I have trained with several UK clubs. None of these clubs offered me the opportunity to continue with my education whilst playing for them. I have an invitation to return after my graduation next year:
    • Norwich City FC (2018) where I trained with their u18 and u23 teams and played games vs Leicester City 23s, Sutton (Seniors) and Colchester 18s.
    • I have been twice to Watford FC (2017 and 2018), after my second trip I was verbally offered a contract by the Head of the Academy, however this did not eventuate as the individual and his coaching team left the club shortly after.
    • I have also spent time with Fulham (2016), Crystal Palace (2017) and Swansea (2017), scoring a goal for Swansea 18s vs Welsh National Schoolboy side.
  • I was selected in an Australian invitational team that toured the UK in Jan 2016 and played against u16 academies at Everton, Tottenham Hotspur, Reading, Charlton, QPR, Burnley, Watford, Blackburn, Sheffield United, Crewe and Fleetwood Town.
  • I was selected in an Australian invitational side to play in a tournament in Korea in August 2016. Teams included FC Barcelona, Liverpool, Tottenham, Valencia, Benfica, and the Korean and Thailand National sides.
