Personal Statement

I am a junior at Covenant Day School in Matthews, NC, right outside the city of Charlotte. My field hockey story is an unusual one. During my freshman year of high school, Covenant Day School started a brand new field hockey program. After trying players in different spots, Coach Snelgrove noticed a natural talent and decided to keep me as goal keeper. Although field hockey was new at our school, our well known conference has the top teams in the state and is a national powerhouse. From our fairly small conference of schools, we have a significant percentage of players going on to play field hockey at D1 colleges and universities. Covenant Day had a great start in our inaugural two seasons as a JV team and then played our first Varsity season the fall of 2017. In that very first year of Varsity competition, our team earned the 8 seed in the state, won our first round game, and lost in the second round to the team that won the state title.

My performance in the goal against the teams in our conference was incredibly strong, as evidenced by my stats. I had 27 saves in a single game and was written up in the local paper. I received both the Coaches Award and MVP for my team. But the award for which I am most proud is winning a place on the All-Conference team. In our nationally competitive conference, CISAA, I was the only goal keeper to win the votes of the coaches for that honor. I was also invited to play in the area All-Star game sponsored by the Charlotte Ambush field hockey club. So while I do not have the amount of game footage and did not start the recruiting process as early as students from more established teams, I believe my success against players in such a strong conference speaks to the level of competition at which I am capable of being successful.

I am hoping to be able to continue to play field hockey when my time in high school is completed. In addition to my love for the sport, I value the comradery and collaboration that a team provides. I have played a sport every season that I have been in high school, and balancing sports and academics is a discipline that I would like to continue to develop. I have learned so much from being on teams and it has brought me some of my closest friendships and taught me some of the most important lessons.
