Personal Statement

I started playing sports at a young age. Growing up having great mentors and being surrounded by violence pushed me to be a leader.  Playing sports was the only thing I enjoyed doing growing up. I was given permission to go outside and play at a playground directly across the street around the age of 7. From there grew my love for sports. I realize that I was better than most kids around my age. The older I became the more I learned. I learned that it's not always about being the best player. Sometimes being the best teammate will take you a lot farther.  Also, I learned that winning isn't everything. I used to beat people by so much some people didn't want to play with me. I didn't learn looking at how it affected me but how it makes people feel. Sometimes sports is just about having fun.

I want to graduate high school with a GPA of 3.0 or better.  I love science and I always wanted to do something that involves it. I believe in the phrase "If you love your job, you'll never work a day in your life".  Recently my civics class has been growing on me more and more. I love speaking on problems that speak to me. I always take the lead in debates from my classmates volunteering me. I want to make a difference. I want to be a leader in my community and create change where there is corruption. I am still overcoming the obstacles life. I've suffered the loss of my great granddad who was my father figure. It hit me hard and I became off-track in terms of grades my freshman year. The very next year around the same time I lost my mom to cancer. I'm the oldest of 3 brothers and 1 sister. They look up to me so I'm trying to set a good example by being the first to graduate from college in my family.
