Personal Statement

I lived in a small town in Idaho where sports weren't taken as seriously and was a little less competitive as it is in North Carolina. I didn't have a special sport that I really focused on when growing up, I ran track and field, was on the swim team, played lacrosse, football and played a little of basketball while growing up, but didn't play competitively until the seventh grade. After I played my first season I was approached by many coaches and players asking me if I would be interested in coming back and playing another season. I came back in the eighth grade and made it onto Varsity, being the youngest player to have ever done that in the White Pine League. After that, I realized my sport must be basketball so I devoted all my time into practicing my handles and shooting every day having multiple certified trainers, but didn't play any club or travel due to  expenses. We than moved to North Carolina and I got put into Cary Christian School. I had been practicing in the off season very hard prepping for the season ahead. By the time try-outs came I got very sick and only made one day of try-outs with bronchitis. Simply, the coaches didn't see me perform very great and had no idea how I would play on a 5v5 with their players because they had also never even heard of my name before, being a new kid at a big high school. I got stuck on JV this past season which was upsetting, but also a very humbling moment in my life. I accepted it how it was and decided that the only thing I could do was to show the Varsity coaches that they were wrong for putting me on JV. Half way through the season I was approached by the Varsity coaches apologizing for putting me on JV and told me that my stats had blown them back and that I would have a bright future here as a basketball player. They liked how I was playing so much that they had me just practicing with Varsity during the week instead of JV, but I still played only in JV games. I am not one for being a selfish player and love getting the whole team involved in everything we do on and off the court. I think I would be a great addition to any team, by my attitude to the players and coaches and my hard work that I put in day in and day out, both in the gym and outside the gym. I've played a lot of sports in my life and have been around a lot of different coaches with different coaching styles and I respect all my coaches even if their coaching style isn't what I like. I like to play sports and stay active, but academics are very important to me and my family. I try to maintain a 4.5gpa and above off of a 5.0 scale which isn't that bad, but I would like to get my gpa up even higher as a Junior and Senior and I have the capability of doing it, I just need to push myself a little more than I am currently.
