Personal Statement
Diego Miranda
September 13th, 2016
My name is Diego José Miranda. I am a seventeen year old senior attending Kalaheo High School in Kailua, Hawaii. My father is an immigrant from Colombia who came to the United States when he was 7. My mother was born in California as an American Citizen, because her mom wanted her to have a better life than any she could’ve had in Nicaragua. The two met in High School and my older brother was born before they graduated. My father joined the Marines to provide for our young family while my mom worked multiple jobs. I was born three and a half years later in Cherry Point, North Carolina.
As school goes I haven’t particularly impressed them, due to my lack of trying, but this year so far I’ve done a good job keeping an A grade point average (gpa). Although it may be too little too late, I’ve begun to take my school work much more seriously, and I'm no more motivated than ever to achieve success as a student athlete.
Luckily for me I've always had an intense passion for soccer. Like most things, soccer is much more fun when you’re good at it. I’ve grown to love it. If I could play soccer, the sport I love, well enough to get into a good school, it would be my greatest accomplishment. In the past I’ve shot my own ideas down. I would claim that playing college soccer is unrealistic and unachievable, as would my teachers. I often tried to sell myself the ideas of becoming a teacher, or joining the military, or the police right after high school. If these teachers meant the best for me, and I meant the best for myself, then how could I sell myself short. It has taken me too long to realize that what I’ve wanted since I was 8 is possible. Although I’ve made it a challenge for myself, I can and I plan to play college soccer. It would make me overwhelmed with joy, and I would give everything I have for the program that selected me.
