Personal Statement

My name is Matthew Almengor. I was born in the Bronx, New York, but raised in the bright lights of Manhattan. My father immigrated to this country from Costa Rica and my mother immigrated to this country from Trinidad and Tobago. Ever since I was younger, I was always told that a kid of my ethnicity couldn’t make it in a sport dominated by whites. It has always been my goal to play college hockey, and I work hard day in and day out to make that a possibility. My parents didn’t go to college, so to be a first generation college athlete would mean the world to my family.
