Personal Statement
My goals are to continue being a part of the team and helping out as best I can. Having a new coaching staff every year in my four years of high school football, has helped shape my personality and character. This has helped show me how important a constant role model is in younger kid’s lives. Most of the football players struggled to keep up with the football plays, not to mention their classes. So having a new staff each year with completely different policies and plays left many struggling. Some had even begun to think that we were the problem, simply not being good enough. Especially when one of our coaches left halfway through a season to go coach another team. The moral was down, and many kids left the team, decreasing it further. Seeing this, I knew it would not get better unless the kids had someone they could turn to and trust on the team.
So I decided to step up and lead, becoming that person for the team. This did not extend only to the football plays and drills, but also with school work. I found myself tutoring in math and chemistry multiple times per week after practice, trying to help my teammates understand and solve their academic problems. This has allowed the team to flourish, as the strengthened communication and trust, allowed us to count on one another to do their jobs on and off the field. We ended up winning the LA City Division Three Championships in my junior year, and half the team won Scholar Athlete awards.
Having to become this leader and the person that the team looks up to and comes for advice truly shaped who I am today. It helped me work on my leadership skills as well as my cooperation, allowing me to make many friends along the way. Without the football team, I would not be who I am today, as the defensive team captain for the past two years, I am someone who leads by example day in and day out.
